Knee High by the 4th of July?

Have you heard the saying "knee high by the 4th of July" in regards to corn?

Well, I'm not sure when and where the expression originated, but the corn around my family farm has been taller than knee high on the 4th of July as far back as I can remember.

I even have proof!

Here's a photo I found of my dad while going through photos at my grandma's house after she passed away a couple of months ago.

It was taken on July 4, 1986 and my grandma wrote on the back: "Norman and our corn on July 4, 1986."

Here's a photo I took of my dad on July 2nd of this year.

The corn is taller this year probably due to an earlier planting date, lot and lots of rain, better seed genetics and better production practices (like conservation tillage).

Happy 4th of July!

  1. Our corn is definitely more than knee high, too! I didn't realize it was that tall back in the 80s, too, because people still use the expression so much!

  2. Too funny. I plan to talk about this same thing in my next Farmer Fridays post this coming Friday. I don't know if our corn is as tall as your dad's, but it is definitely way taller than "knee high."

I love that you have a picture of your grandpa in the field at the 4th of July.

    Happy 4th of July!!

  4. So I've heard @ work, it's a pre-hybrid corn thing. I always get a charge out of it, too. How long have farmers been planting hybrid corn?
